The company was incorporated in 1883 to serve the following rail carriers: St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway; Eastern Railway Company of Minnesota; Northern Pacific Railway; St. Paul and Duluth Railroad; Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway; and Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway.
